Mott MacDonald is a wholly independent, employee-owned company with 16,000 staff worldwide. We are continually winning commercial and industry awards, including being 'International Consultancy of the Year' (NCE/ACE). We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate, and take positive steps to create an inclusive culture.
Mott MacDonald have secured several high profile rail projects within the UK for Morgan Sindall and are seeking an experienced Graduate Civil Engineer in our York Civils team to contribute to the delivery of these large multi-discipline schemes. The team also works closely with our Sheffield, Leeds and Altrincham offices to deliver a range of projects - including bridge design and assessment packages - to Network Rail and contractors such as Volker Fitzpatrick and BAM Nuttall; the successful candidate will play a key role in completing designs, assessments and reports for such projects as well as collaborating with technicians and modellers to ensure the delivery of high quality engineering drawings.
As an experienced graduate, it is expected that the candidate will manage small design packages and provide a basic level of support and mentoring for less experienced engineers and apprentices. This is a long-term career appointment with the opportunity to develop a broad technical skillset across a range of civil engineering aspects through working on a variety of diverse projects. The opportunity to advance to a more senior position within Mott MacDonald is available to those candidates that have the ability and aptitude to work effectively on simultaneous projects and can demonstrate a commitment to technical and professional excellence.
Job description
As a key member of the Civil Engineering team in York, the primary responsibility will be the design of civil engineering structures and elements and managing technicians to produce multi-disciplinary models and engineering drawings, predominantly for rail projects being delivered under the GRIP process. Most projects - including grade separated junctions, stations, track reinstatement, geotechnics and level crossings - will require close working with other disciplines within Mott MacDonald to form an integrated multi-disciplinary team; thus, the ability to communicate and cooperate well with others is critical in this role. Similarly, on Design and Build projects in which we are engaged directly by the Main Contractor, there is a key requirement for positive collaboration with the Contractor project team to ensure effective construction delivery.
We are also completing further projects for Network Rail, including a bridge assessment framework and some Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU) upgrade schemes, which involve writing reports, assessment calculations (by hand and using structural analysis software), design checks and risk assessments.
Day to day activities will involve close collaboration with engineers from the York team but also the wider Mott MacDonald office network - in particular, our European Design Centre offices in Sofia and Prague.
This is a challenging role that will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to advance their technical skills and progress within the company.
There will be the opportunity to receive structured training towards Chartered or Incorporated status with the ICE, which will be strongly encouraged.
Candidate specification
Essential academic, professional qualifications and experience:
- BEng/MEng in civil engineering
- At least three years' experience in a design office environment, preferably rail
- Ability to complete civils design calculations, technical reports, specifications and design risk assessments under supervision
- Proficient in use of analysis software e.g. Midas, Lusas, Staad, etc.)
- Evidence of progress towards professional review
- Knowledge of CDM2015
The candidate will ideally have rail civils experience and be familiar with Network Rail Standards and the GRIP process; however, for the right candidate, we will provide training and mentoring to develop this knowledge. The candidate must be able to demonstrate strong technical skills and provide suitable documentary evidence. Bridge assessment experience and reinforcement detailing experience are desirable for this position but not essential. A current PTS certification would be an advantage
