Our client is a leading environmental consultancy with offices in countries all over the world. They offer services which range from sustainability consultancy and due diligence auditing to contaminated land remediation and financial engineering of environmental liabilities.
Due to their continued growth success an opportunity has become available for a Geotechnical Principal Engineer or Senior Engineer to join their team based in Bristol.
Duties of the role will include -
To undertake geotechnical engineering activities within the group, with a particular requirement to focus efforts within the infrastructure, rail, highways and building sectors, plus heavy civil engineering projects in the UK and possibly overseas. Effective delivery of tasks as assigned, in particular:
Delivering geotechnical engineering (design and consultancy) specific tasks and projects
Contributing to the engineering input to multi-disciplinary infrastructure (rail/highway engineering, building) (design and consultancy) and other heavy civil engineering projects
Undertaking desktop and site based studies in support of geotechnical and civil design delivery, including railway possession working if necessary
Preparing Phase I desk study reports
Preparing ground models, including GIS and 3D geological models
Producing Ground Investigation Reports (GIR) and Geotechnical Design Reports (GDRs), with for review, to support engineering delivery, in accordance with Eurocode 7 (EC7) requirements
Undertaking foundation analysis and design in support of engineering projects, in accordance with current national and international codes of practice (specifically Eurocodes)
Design of slope stabilisation measures, retaining walls, earthworks and geotechnical structures
Design, specification and supervision of ground investigations, including management of sub-contractors on site and scheduling laboratory testing of soil, rock and groundwater samples
Design of geotechnical instrumentation (e.g. piezometers, standpipes, inclinometers)
Inspection and geotechnical assessment of existing infrastructure assets (eg. highway, rail earthworks)
Planning, co-ordination and supervision of remedial works, including soil/rock slopes, piles, retaining walls, gravity foundations, track and other structures
Successful management and delivery of geotechnical engineering designs from concept to detail design on time and within quality requirements and project financial constraints
Production of the necessary deliverables required for a project, including the development and production of drawings/calculations/specifications and reports
Checking drawings, calculations, specifications and deliverables produced by more junior staff
Co-ordination with other disciplines within the company to provide a complete geotechnical engineering design
Ensuring technical and professional accuracy of project work
Contribution to project teams and to be a team player
Understanding and keeping up to date with technical and legislative developments within the geotechnical engineering industry
Provide assistance in the preparation of fee proposals
Liaising with third parties and clients in a professional manner that enhances the company brand in the market place

Knowledge and Experience
Work Experience and Knowledge
Thorough understanding of engineering components in geotechnical design and reporting to Eurocode 7
Knowledge and experience of geotechnical construction works and engineering contracts
Proficiency in the use of business systems and software such as the Microsoft Office suite (specifically Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
Experience in the use of geological databases and modelling software such as gINT and GIS packages such as ArcView, plus experience in the use of geotechnical analysis software, such as Slope/W, Slide, Wallap, Repute and Plaxis would be advantageous
A working knowledge and experience of Network Rail standards, procedures and operations would be advantageous
A working knowledge and experience of Highways Agency standards, procedures and operations would be advantageous, specifically reporting to HD22/08
Essential Qualifications
Degree level education with particular speciality in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology or foundation engineering
Professionally accredited Chartered status registered with the Engineering Council, preferably MICE, with relevant consultant/contractor experience in the above fields, likely to have extensive post graduate experience
Desirable Qualifications and Formal Training
Masters degree (MEng, MSc)
CSCS card holder
PTS Sentinel card holder
Additional Responsibilities
The geotechnical support to multi-disciplinary engineering within the infrastructure sector calls for a good degree of flexibility and willingness to travel to geographically varied sites throughout the country and the possibility of overseas work. A collaborative approach to projects will be required.
Rail site works are generally focussed around possession availability with a number of these requiring either weekend or night-time working.
The role reports directly to the Geotechncial Team Leader, but will require project management of small/less complex (geotechnical) projects.
Preparation and contribution to fee proposals.
Familiarity with agreed fees, scope of services and programme.
Management of project resources and programme as required.
Attend design team/site meetings to represent geotechnical discipline as required.
Liaise and correspond day to day with design team/client/contractor, internally and externally.
Understand, follow, maintain and supervise office document management system for projects.
Implement project BMS and SHE policies and CDM requirements
Price / Salary: £30000 - £50000/annum
