**Job purpose** :
To plan and carry out experimental work towards the discovery, development and improvement of gene therapies currently under development within the group.
**Key responsibilities and accountabilities:**
* Development and improvement in gene therapies utilising the OXB lentiviral vector platform
* Agree objectives with the line manager in-line with company and research group objectives, and be responsible for achieving them in the agreed time frame where possible.
* With the line manager, ensure that they have received the appropriate level of training for safe, effective and GxP-compliant aspects of their work, and personally ensure that this is captured in their training record.
* Independently plan, manage and execute experimental work in line with the research objectives as directed and agreed with their line manager.
* Have excellent knowledge of project area literature and ensure the group is up to date with current thinking and literature.
* Maintain a high ethical standard and a commitment to producing high quality work.
* Report results to the group and head of department either as written reports or at internal meetings
* Responsible for ensuring all scientific data is submitted to PatentSafe or recorded in appropriate official documentation.
* If relevant, supervise junior members of the team at day-to-day technical level and/or by directing their research projects in collaboration with the line manager.
* Support other members of the team and wider the Research Group as required
**** **Key skills and requirements:**
* PhD or equivalent in relevant Bioscience (e.g. virology, molecular and/or cellular biology) and have several years post-doctoral experience in academia or industry
* Excellent lab-based skills with particular emphasis on molecular biology that include but not limited to: DNA/microbial cloning RT-/PCR, qPCR, immunoblotting and cell biology techniques that include but not limited to: cell culture (adherent/suspension), cell transfection, viral vector production/purification, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Excellent organisational and time management skills
* Good attention to detail
* Highly motivated
* Ability to execute projects to aggressive timelines with the ability to adapt to rapid changes in project priorities.
* Expertise in lentiviral vector gene therapies a distinct advantage.
**Person Specification:**
* Industry experience in gene or cell therapies for disease with ocular or neurological disease experience preferable
* Knowledge and experience of developing viral vector based therapies
* A highly motivated, enthusiastic, positive attitude
* Ability to demonstrate (by peer-reviewed publications) the ability to work independently, and with a good understanding of the field they are working within
* Ability to work well in a team setting, and when appropriate ensure others are able to perform the tasks to the benefit of the team objective.
**** **About Early Development/Discovery and Design Group**
The Discovery and Design group is part of the broader Early development group which has a core function in the Research department to discover and develop new gene and cell therapies to treat disease.
